Saint John’s Program for Real Change Receives Maximus Foundation Grant As Part of 2023 Annual Giving

Maximus Foundation To Award $2.2 Million in 2023 to Non-Profits Nationwide for Community Development, Youth Programs, and Healthcare Services.

(Sacramento, Calif. — May 25, 2023)Maximus, a leading employer and provider of government services nationwide, announced that the Maximus Foundation awarded Saint John’s Program for Real Change a grant for part of its annual giving to 191 nonprofit organizations across the United States this year.

The grants are aimed at furthering three key themes that drive the Foundation’s work: community development, youth programs, and healthcare services. The number of grantees represents a 14.3% increase over the number of 2022 grantees, and the total giving is the largest annual level in the Foundation’s 23-year history.

“We are profoundly grateful to the Maximus Foundation for their generous grant, which will have a transformative impact on the lives of women in need. This partnership allows Saint John’s Program for Real Change to expand our reach and provide comprehensive support to empower women facing homelessness. Together, we will break down barriers, ignite hope, and create a brighter future for those who deserve it most,” said Julie Hirota, Chief Executive Officer, Saint John’s Program for Real Change.

The Maximus Foundation is driven by a mission to support organizations and programs promoting personal growth and self-sufficiency. Saint John’s mission is to unleash the potential of women and children in crisis by breaking the cycle of poverty and dependence, one family at a time. Clients achieve self-sufficiency through an intense, comprehensive program of personal growth lasting 18 months.

Saint John’s achieves results by providing clients with all of the necessary tools and opportunities to pursue transformational change. The women enrolled at Saint John’s face several, often co-occurring challenges that are barriers to self-sustainability:

  •  79 percent struggle with substance use
  •  75 percent have experienced domestic violence
  •  65 percent have a criminal history
  •  59 percent struggle with mental illness
  •  62 percent do not hold a high school diploma or GED
  • The average Saint John’s client is 34 years old with two children

Saint John’s overarching goal is to permanently reduce the number of homeless women and children in the region by not only providing housing, but by also helping women to develop the personal habits and professional skills needed to begin and maintain lives of well-being and independence. The holistic and immersive approach, within an up-to-18-month residential program, addresses the short-term goals of immediate stabilization care, mental, physical, and vocational assessment; mid-term goals of self-development, addiction recovery, career exploration, and hands-on employment training; and long-term goals of job acquisition, self-reliance, and family sustainability.

“On behalf of the Maximus Foundation, I congratulate Saint John’s Program for Real Change on becoming a 2023 Maximus Foundation grantee,” said Arvenita Washington Cherry, Maximus Foundation President. “Saint John’s Program for Real Change has shown the important of engaging, encouraging, and supporting all members of its communities. Their work around inclusion reminds us that, together, we can empower individuals and families in your community. We congratulate everyone at Saint John’s Program for Real Change for their dedication to the community and look forward to our partnership.”
